Kenosha, Wisconsin, has a new hotel, the Stella Hotel and Ballroom. The building that houses the downtown hotel started out as the Kenosha Elks Club in 1919. A century later, the building still maintains its early 20th century character but with all of the amenities of a 21st century hotel.

Architecture and decor
The building’s stately Georgian Revival exterior is preserved, with the original dark brick, columns, and arched windows. In fact, the building was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2017. Inside, the spacious lobby is bright. The lobby decor includes a nice blend of contemporary and early 1900s details. Elegant chandeliers drape the ceiling, and an old-style telephone sets on a table in a sitting area.
Arched windows line both sides of the third-floor ballroom, adding to the room’s elegance. I viewed the ballroom from the four-floor balcony. Looking down onto the room, I could imagine early 20th century balls taking place, ladies in their brocade gowns and men in dapper tuxedos.
Comfortable, spacious guest rooms
Our king room was in an addition to the original building, It had plenty of room and lots of outlets for charging our electronics. I loved that even the iron and ironing board were a good sturdy quality. (I’m a stickler for ironing, especially when traveling and clothes have been packed into luggage.)
The Stella Hotel and Ballroom also offers Heritage Rooms, large. luxury rooms and suites in the original wing of the building.
Dining and other amenities
The Stella Hotel and Ballroom offers two dining options. The Café at the Stella offers casual, order-at-the-counter options, and is open breakfast through dinner. The 1844 Table & Mash is a fine dining restaurant open for lunch and dinner. Unfortunately, during our stay we didn’t get a chance to try either restaurant.
I peeked at the fitness room, located on the lower level. Equipped with several treadmills and other equipment, weights and exercise balls, the room is perfect for an early morning workout.
Located in downtown Kenosha
The hotel is in a convenient downtown Kenosha location, within walking distance of shops and restaurants, and just blocks from Lake Michigan. We loved that Scoops Ice Cream was right across the street, where we indulged in a late evening treat.
