Embassy Suites Mandalay Beach, Oxnard Calif.

After a long afternoon tied up in Southern California freeway traffic, we arrived at the Embassy Suites Mandalay Beach in Oxnard, with little time to spare before we had to rush out for dinner. There would be no time right now to enjoy the beach at the only all-suite beachfront resort in Southern California. However, I was thrilled to find two bathrooms in our suite. We could both freshen up at the same time without tripping over each other.

Our balcony overlooked the swimming pool, which was surrounded by palm trees and other tropical landscaping. I could see the ocean from our room, too. It would be just a short walk through the resort from our room to the beach. Other suites are right on the beachfront.

Our huge suite had a private bedroom and a living room with enough space and seating to throw a small reception. The wet bar would come in handy for that. We didn’t have any parties, but the space was convenient for work we had to do while we were there. Skip worked at the desk, and I curled up with my computer on the sofa. The hi-speed internet access worked like a champ.

Embassy Suites Mandalay Beach resort amenities

Our schedule was jam-packed during our short stay in Oxnard, but when we explored the resort, we wished we could have spent more time there—on the beach, at the pool, playing tennis, riding a bike or sipping a cocktail in the bar.

We did take advantage of the complimentary evening reception. We grabbed a cocktail and an assortment of snacks and sat outside where we could hear the rush of a waterfall, take in the tropical scenery and enjoy the early evening sun.

Embassy Suites Mandalay Beach complimentary breakfast

We also took advantage of the complimentary breakfast. The buffet seemed to go on forever, with eggs, bacon, breakfast potatoes, oatmeal, fresh fruit, yogurt and more. Juice, milk, pastries and dry cereal were in a separate side room. One morning we had omelets cooked to order. If we would have preferred our eggs prepared another way, like over-easy, the chef would have done that for us. After filling up on breakfast we didn’t need another meal until late in the day.

There’s plenty to do right at the Embassy Suites Mandalay Beach, but if you’re like us, you’d probably want to explore the Oxnard area while you’re there. Fine or casual dining, kayaking, museums, golf courses and cruises to view wildlife or to the Channel Islands National Park are all within a short distance from the resort.
