Last summer we headed to Elkhart County in northern Indiana to travel the world’s only quilt gardens driving tour. The quilt gardens are intertwined with the area’s Heritage Trail, so we essentially took two driving tours simultaneously. The drive takes you along city streets and country roads in both Elkhart and LaGrange Counties, passing through seven cities and towns, including Nappanee and Shipshewana, the heart of Amish Country.
I have visited Amish communities several times over the years. Although I’ve chatted with the folks in shops and restaurants, I’ve never had an opportunity to really get to know them. However, on our recent trip to Elkhart County, Indiana, my husband and I were invited to have dinner with an Amish family. This wasn’t one of the commercial, large group events that you see advertised in Amish areas. This was just my husband, me, and another man who was a guest of the Murphy Guest House where we were staying.
When I heard about the Quilt Gardens tour in Northern Indiana, and saw pictures of some of the gardens, I knew I had to take the self-guided driving tour. I was not disappointed. The quilt gardens are just as pretty as the pictures I had seen. Moreover, it was fun to follow the map provided by the Elkhart Country Convention & Visitors Bureau to find each of the gardens along the world’s only quilt gardens tour.
