Planning to tour Hoover Dam while you visit Las Vegas? Afterwards, why not spend the rest of the day in nearby Boulder City, the town that was built for the dam workers? You can easily fill your day with all there is to do and see. Here are some suggestions.
Go antique shopping
With over a dozen antique shops and malls, Boulder City is an antique shopper’s dream. Not being a collector myself, I still find it fun to browse through these shops.
Visit the Boulder City/Hoover Dam Museum
If you’ve already toured Hoover Dam, you’ll know a lot about how the dam was built. The Boulder City/Hoover Dam Museum, inside the historic Boulder Dam Hotel, tells the story from the human prospective. Hear the experiences of dam workers and learn about the first master planned city in the United States, built just for the Hoover Dam construction workers and their families.
Eat
We were in Boulder City on two occasions during our two-month stay in southern Nevada. We tried a handful of eateries and were happy with every one of them, from the chicken pot pie at the Restaurant at the Boulder Dam Hotel to the ice cream at Grandma Daisy’s. The Dillinger had great burgers and sandwiches, and we enjoyed happy hour in the outdoor courtyard at the Boulder Dam Brewing Co.
Zipline
Ready for adventure? Soar across Bootleg Canyon with Flightlinez. Tours start with a safety class in the Boulder City office before they drive you out to the zipline site. Plan to spend about two-and-a-half hours for the zipline tour.
Check out public art
Many of the art sculptures throughout the downtown area reflect the city’s culture and history, but some are just plain fun. There are some fun displays outside shops, too.

See bighorn sheep in Hemenway Park
Or not. They say you can often see up to a hundred bighorn sheep at a time in Hemenway Park, as they escape the desert heat. We were there on a beautiful day in February, so apparently the sheep were comfortable enough in the desert. We didn’t see one. However, we did take in a gorgeous view of Lake Mead from the park.
Ride the Nevada Southern Railway
Excursion trains on the Nevada Southern Railway run from the Nevada State Railroad Museum on Saturdays and Sundays only, so plan accordingly. Unfortunately, both of our Boulder City visits were on weekdays. Although they say you can still view the trains, it’s mostly behind fences.
If you visit Boulder City
Boulder City is 30 miles southeast of Las Vegas, 8 miles southwest of Hoover Dam, and about 80 miles north of Laughlin, Nevada. For more details and to check out additional places to visit in Boulder City, check the Visit Boulder City website.

Great tips! I’ll be in Vegas for a weekend in November so I might try to squeeze in a trip to Boulder City as well!
Boulder City is a nice break from the busy-ness of Vegas.
I am definitely interested to learn more about the Hoover Dam so that museum sounds great. Ans the ziplining looks pretty intense!
The museum was really interesting, and the Historic Boulder Dam Hotel that it’s in, built in the 1930s, is beautiful.
I’ve never been to Boulder City. It looks fun. I think I could pass up the pie, but not the ice cream!
The ice cream was really good.
You hooked me with Grandma Daisys. Mmmmm. Boulder City looks fun.
Boulder City really is a fun way to spend an afternoon.
